As much as it sounds like the site of some medieval Norwich ghouls, Tombland was actually the site of an Anglo- Saxon Market Place, and means ‘open space’.

It is now the location where some of the most popular bars, restaurants and pubs in the city.

Tombland History

When visiting Tombland, you must take some time to appreciate the steep history of the area. Stand in front of Ethelbert’s Gate which is one of the two main ways to enter Norwich Cathedral.

You will also find the awe-inspiring Edith Cavell Statue which was put up in he honour of saving over 200 soldiers during the first world war and something that led her to her death in 1915.

The Maid’s Head pub has also been there since 1287, and what a great way to feel as though you were back in medieval times than enjoying a nice pint of ale!

Walks

You can easily lose track of time walking around when you are visiting Tombland, Norwich popping in and out of the coffee shops and bars.

Don’t forget to look in the Tombland Bookshop, a firm favourite among the city residents.

It is close to the beautiful river and don’t forget to explore the historic grounds of Norwich Cathedral too.
